Kenley

Kenley is an English place and surname name, familiar from the district in the London Borough of Croydon. Names ending in ley often preserve an old word for a woodland clearing, placing Kenley within a larger landscape-based naming tradition. The first part of this particular name is less securely explained, so the popular gloss “well-known clearing” is better treated cautiously.

As a first name, Kenley has been used for both girls and boys. Its two familiar pieces can also make it a personal tribute to a Ken or a Lee in the family, although that is a modern naming intention rather than the origin of the place. Kenlee offers a closely related spelling with the same approachable shape.
