Kenton

Kenton comes from English place names that share an ending meaning settlement or farmstead. Their first elements vary: some are associated with royalty, while others preserve a personal name or an older river name. “Royal settlement” is therefore a valid interpretation for part of the surname’s history rather than a universal definition.

Jazz bandleader Stan Kenton gives the surname a recognizable musical connection. As a first name, Kenton can also offer a longer form for someone who likes the short name Kent, although Kent has its own independent place-name history. A family surname or geographic connection may identify which Kenton story matters most. The name combines a familiar two-syllable shape with roots in the English landscape.
