Kerry

Kerry is closely associated with County Kerry in southwestern Ireland. The county’s name comes through Ciarraí, referring to the people of Ciar; Ciar is connected with the Irish word for “black” or “dark.” The place-name history is therefore more specific than a simple description of someone’s hair. As a first name, Kerry can carry a direct connection to a family’s Irish roots or to the county itself.

Its geographical associations include Atlantic coastlines, mountains, and the landscapes of the Ring of Kerry. The name has been used for both boys and girls, with the same place-name background available to either. A family connection to Kerry can make the county the central part of its meaning, while the older Ciarraí form offers another layer of Irish history behind the familiar spelling.
