Kit

Kit is a traditional English short form of both Christopher and Katherine. Through Christopher it connects with the Greek meaning “Christ-bearer.” Katherine has an uncertain earlier origin, although it has long been associated with the Greek word for “pure.” Kit therefore does not carry one fixed meaning that applies equally to every family using it.

It also works as a complete unisex name. Actors Kit Harington and Kit Connor have made the short form familiar to contemporary audiences, while its history reaches well beyond them. The English word kit can refer to a young animal, including a fox, but that is a separate word association rather than the nickname’s origin. Its three letters leave little need for further shortening.
