Kobe

Kobe is widely recognized through the Japanese city and through basketball player Kobe Bryant, whose given name was connected with Kobe beef. That place and sporting association is a clear route into modern American use. Similar spellings can occur in other languages, but their meanings should not automatically be assigned to a name chosen for the city or player.

Kobe’s two syllables make it compact, although Japanese and English speakers may give the final vowel different sounds. Parents considering it as an honor name can be specific about whom or what it commemorates. The name’s appeal need not depend on translating it as an unrelated animal word.
