Kolbe

Kolbe comes from a German surname associated with an older word for a club or mace. As a given name, however, its best-known inspiration is often Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the Polish Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of another prisoner at Auschwitz. That personal story can be more important to a family than the surname’s literal derivation.

Kolbe therefore combines a German-language surname history with a major Polish Catholic association. Maximilian is the saint’s given name, while Kolbe is the family name adopted by some parents for a child. This German surname route differs from the English place-name history commonly associated with Colby. Families may choose it as a direct remembrance of sacrifice and faith.
