Landry

Landry is a French form connected with the Germanic name Landric, traditionally interpreted as “ruler of the land.” It has also been used as a surname. The name’s history includes Saint Landry, a bishop of Paris, but its underlying meaning comes from the older personal-name elements rather than from a church office.

Coach Tom Landry provides a familiar surname association, distinct from Landry’s use as a first name. In contemporary US naming it is used for boys and girls. Families may choose it to preserve a surname, honor a namesake, or keep the French form; none of those choices requires treating its historical ruler meaning as a prediction about the child.
