Porter

Porter is an occupational surname with routes associated with keeping a door or carrying goods. Both are familiar historical uses of the word, but they describe different kinds of work. The surname history explains the first name without requiring a modern bearer to have any connection to those occupations.

The two-syllable shape places Porter alongside surname names such as Parker and Carter, which have separate meanings of their own. It can preserve a family surname unchanged or be chosen for its sound. Porter is used for boys and girls, and the full form is already brief enough for everyday use without adding a nickname or a longer formal version.
