Kota

Kota is used in Japanese naming, often written more precisely in Latin letters as Kōta or Kouta. Its meaning depends on the kanji chosen for the original name, so a single English translation cannot be assigned from the Roman spelling alone. Wrestler Kota Ibushi provides a recognizable bearer in this Japanese tradition.

In English-speaking families, Kota may instead be a short form of Dakota, giving it a separate connection with that name. The Japanese name and the Dakota shortening are different histories, even though their spellings coincide. Preserving the intended original name or written characters helps a family explain the choice more accurately than combining every possible meaning into one phrase.
