Lamar

Lamar is an English-language surname and given name associated with French place-name language concerning a pool or pond. The familiar explanation “dweller by a pool” describes a geographical surname route rather than a character trait. It should not automatically be translated as “the sea” simply because mar resembles words for sea in other languages.

Basketball player Lamar Odom is a recognizable first-name bearer. Lamarr is a related spelling, familiar as the stage surname of actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr, though that public identity has its own personal history. These references offer different reasons a family might recognize the name. Lamar's landscape meaning and surname background remain distinct from any one famous person's achievements.
