Lane

Lane is an English word and surname name associated with a small road or path. The countryside imagery some families hear in it comes from that ordinary word meaning. It is distinct from longer names such as Elaine or Delaney, even though Lane can also be used as a personal shortening of them.

Layne and Laine are alternative spellings that usually sound the same in English. Actors Diane Lane and Nathan Lane provide recognizable surname associations. The first name’s single syllable gives it a different rhythm from many longer surname names. Parents can choose Lane for a family surname or a place-related image without needing to turn that image into a more elaborate meaning.
