Larry

Larry is a short form of Lawrence, which developed from Latin Laurentius, meaning someone from Laurentum. The place name has traditionally been associated with the laurel, explaining why laurel meanings also appear in name lists. The direct personal-name explanation is geographical rather than simply a word meaning victory or honor.

Larry has long been used both as a nickname and as a complete given name. Parents honoring a Lawrence may prefer the form that the relative actually used day to day. Laurence is another spelling of the longer name, while Laurie offers a different shortening. Choosing Larry directly preserves its familiar two-syllable sound without requiring a longer official version for adulthood.
