Lawrence

Lawrence comes from Latin Laurentius, identifying someone from Laurentum in ancient Italy. The name is also traditionally associated with laurel, but the place-based explanation is the most direct account of the personal name. Symbols such as victory or achievement belong to the laurel’s cultural history rather than being additional literal translations of Lawrence.

Larry and Lawrie offer familiar everyday forms. Laurence is a close spelling alternative, while Laurent and Lorenzo show how the name developed in French and Italian. Families honoring a relative can preserve either English spelling while choosing a nickname independently. The two-syllable full name also works comfortably without a shortened version.
