Lorenzo

Lorenzo is an Italian and Spanish form in the Lawrence and Laurence family, traditionally meaning “from Laurentum.” The meaning is geographical, referring to an ancient Italian place, rather than being a direct translation of a personal quality. Its longer ending gives it a different rhythm from the English forms.

Lorenzo de’ Medici, the Florentine patron of the arts, is a prominent historical bearer. The name also appears in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice as the young man who marries Jessica. Renzo and Enzo are established short forms and can also be used independently. Parents who like those shorter names may want to decide whether Lorenzo’s historical connections and three-syllable cadence add something they want in a formal name.
