Layton

Layton is an English surname and place-derived name, traditionally explained through Old English elements associated with leeks and a settlement. The agricultural meaning belongs to the older place name, rather than describing a modern occupation or a child’s character. Like many surnames, it later became available for use as a first name.

Leighton and Leyton are close spelling comparisons, although individual family surnames can have their own local histories. Layton makes the usual long first vowel especially visible to English readers. Its two-syllable rhythm works as a complete name, and an inherited family spelling can be a stronger reason for choosing it than a fashionable ending.
