Lenore

Lenore is related to Leonora and Eleanor, a long-established name family whose earliest meaning remains uncertain. The shorter form preserves the central nor sound and gives the name a compact, distinct ending. Its literary associations are especially strong in English, where Edgar Allan Poe used Lenore in both a poem of that title and in The Raven.

Those works give Lenore an atmosphere of remembrance and longing, while the name itself can carry a family connection quite separate from the poetry. Leonore and Leonora offer neighboring forms with a fuller appearance or an additional ending. Lenore’s appeal rests on that combination of an established traditional family and a particularly recognizable place in nineteenth-century literature.
