Leonora

Leonora is a form of Eleonora and Eleanor, names whose deeper origin is uncertain. Despite the familiar Leo beginning, it is not automatically a feminine translation of lion. Its long use across European languages has given it an identity independent of attempts to assign a simple dictionary meaning.

Leonora has a particularly strong place in opera, including the heroine of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. Artist and writer Leonora Carrington adds a distinctive connection with Surrealism and with twentieth-century cultural life in Mexico. Lenora and Leonore offer related forms with different rhythms. For a family drawn to the arts, the name’s documented bearers and characters provide a richer story than an uncertain light or lion translation.
