Leonor

Leonor is a Spanish and Portuguese form of Eleanor, whose original meaning is uncertain. It belongs to a name family with a long royal history in Europe. The resemblance to Leona can create a lion association, but lioness is not a secure etymology for Leonor itself.

Eleanor of England, who married Alfonso VIII of Castile, helped bring this name family into medieval Spanish royal history. Later queens and other notable women carried Leonor in both Spain and Portugal. Artist Leonor Fini provides a different, artistic association with the exact spelling. Nora is a familiar shorter form. Parents choosing Leonor can therefore value its Iberian language identity and historical depth without needing to settle the older Eleanor meaning.
