Leone

Leone is an Italian form of Leo and the Italian word for lion. It also occurs as a feminine name in English, related to the Leona family. Those uses share the lion root, but their pronunciation and gender associations can differ, so the same spelling may be understood differently in an Italian or English-speaking household.

The name family reaches back to Latin leo and includes Leon, Leona, and Leonie in different traditions. Leone keeps the fuller Italian ending in its masculine use, giving it a different rhythm from the compact Leo. The lion may carry personal associations with courage or strength, but the direct meaning is the animal itself. For families comparing related forms, the intended language and family history can help determine which spelling best preserves their connection.
