Levin

Levin is a German form of the older name Leobwin. Its Germanic elements combine liob, meaning dear or beloved, with wini, meaning friend. The resulting interpretation, “dear friend,” belongs to this given-name history, which provides a clear explanation for the compact modern spelling.

Leobwin shows the two original parts more visibly, while Levin reflects the way a long compound name can become shorter over time. That relationship makes Levin an option for families drawn to friendship meanings without choosing the English word itself. The spelling also exists as a surname with its own family histories, so an inherited surname connection may tell a different story. For Levin used in the German first-name tradition, the affectionate friendship meaning is the relevant one.
