Lexie

Lexie is a familiar form of Alexandra or Alexis and can also be used on its own. These names share a Greek element meaning “to defend” or “to help.” Through Alexandra, the fuller meaning is traditionally expressed as “defender of people,” while Alexis places the emphasis on the defending element itself.

Lexie Grey in Grey's Anatomy provides a recognizable screen association for this spelling. The ie ending gives the written name a different finish from Lexi while keeping the same familiar sound. Lexie can preserve a connection with an Alexandra in the family or be chosen as the complete name. The longer name intended, if there is one, supplies the most precise explanation of its background.
