Lia

Lia can be a form of Leah, particularly in Italian, Portuguese, and Greek naming. Leah’s original meaning is uncertain, although “weary” is a traditional explanation. Lia also works as a shortening of names ending in -lia, including Amelia, Natalia, and Aurelia. In those cases, its background comes from the longer name instead.

That flexibility is helpful for families honoring someone, but it means there is no single translation that covers every Lia. The usual English sound is LEE-uh, with two syllables. Lia can be registered and used as a complete first name, so parents who like its simplicity do not need to choose a longer version merely to make it feel formal.
