Lino

Lino has two established routes. It is an Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese form of Linus, a Greek name traditionally connected with flax. It can also arise as an Italian short form of longer names ending in lino. In that second setting, its meaning follows the full family name rather than automatically becoming flax.

This distinction matters when the name is used to honor someone. A Lino named after a Linus has one clear connection, while a Lino taken from a longer Italian name may carry another. The form itself is complete and familiar in several languages, with four letters and an open final vowel. Its history offers both an independent classical name and an affectionate everyday form, depending on the family story.
