Lonnie

Lonnie is a familiar form used with several longer names, especially Alonzo and Alonso. Those names belong to the Alfonso family, traditionally interpreted through Germanic elements meaning noble and ready. Lonnie can also develop from other names with prominent l and n sounds, so a family’s intended longer form matters when explaining its meaning.

It has a long history as a first name in its own right, with a relaxed sound that does not require a formal expansion. Its use for both boys and girls reflects that flexible nickname background. A family preserving a relative’s Lonnie may value the familiar form itself, whether or not the older records include a longer name behind it.
