Lotus

Lotus is an English flower name associated with the water-growing plant. In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the lotus carries important symbolism, including purity and spiritual awakening. Its growth from muddy water into a flower above the surface helps explain those associations, which are richer than a simple prediction about a child’s character.

The ancient Greek stories of the lotus-eaters use the same familiar English word, but their legendary plant should not automatically be identified with the sacred Asian lotus. As a given name, Lotus can reflect an interest in botany, a religious connection, or a family’s own experience of the flower. The botanical word remains the clearest direct meaning.
