Madden

Madden comes from the Irish surname Ó Madáin, meaning a descendant of Madán. The personal name behind the surname is connected with madadh, “dog,” in a diminutive form. “Little dog” is therefore a useful explanation of the older name element, while the surname itself expresses descent from a person who bore that name.

The surname is familiar through football coach and broadcaster John Madden and the video games that carry his name. Musician Joel Madden provides a separate cultural association. Used as a first name, Madden can refer to either a family connection or those public namesakes without requiring one particular inspiration. Its Irish surname history remains distinct from its modern sports and entertainment associations.
