Major

Major comes from a Latin word meaning “greater” and is familiar in English as a military rank. As a given name it can therefore work both as a word name and as a title-inspired choice. The rank association is immediate for many readers, but bearing the name does not imply military service or a particular family background.

Literature supplies a memorable example in Joseph Heller's Catch-22, with its character Major Major Major Major. That deliberately repetitive fictional name makes a very different impression from Major used once in an ordinary full name. The given name also has historical usage beyond contemporary title-name fashions. Its meaning is a comparison, not a prediction that a child will outrank or outperform anyone else.
