Malone

Malone began as an Irish family name, from Ó Maoil Eoin. The full surname refers to a descendant of a devotee of Saint John: Ó marks descent, while the remaining elements contain the religious dedication. A family associated with the ecclesiastical center of Clonmacnoise is part of the surname's recorded Irish history.

As a first name, Malone keeps that surname heritage while working independently of it. The traditional song Molly Malone gives the name a familiar Irish cultural association, and Samuel Beckett used Malone for the central figure in his novel Malone Dies. Those musical and literary connections add to its appeal as a name with a recognizable life beyond genealogy. For a family passing on Malone from an ancestor, the original surname meaning supplies another layer of personal history.
