Mari

Mari occurs in several distinct naming traditions. In many European languages it is a form of Mary or Maria, ultimately related to Miriam, whose original meaning is uncertain. In Basque tradition, Mari is also the name of a figure associated with nature and the weather. Those histories should not be merged into one universal translation.

Japanese Mari depends on the characters chosen, so the Latin-letter spelling alone cannot reveal its exact meaning. In Estonian, mari is also a word for a berry alongside its use within the Mary name family. The particular language and family context therefore matter more than choosing one appealing definition from a long list of possibilities.
