Mary

Mary is the familiar English form of a name family that includes Maria, Mariam, and Maryam. Its original meaning is uncertain. Interpretations such as “bitter,” “beloved,” or “drop of the sea” reflect different proposals, rather than several equally established meanings that can all be combined into a definition.

The New Testament gives Mary a particularly strong religious history, including Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Its long use has also produced many affectionate forms, such as Molly and Mamie, which can be chosen independently. Maria and Marie offer other language forms, while Mary keeps a short, two-syllable English shape. For families honoring a Mary, that wide name family allows a connection through either the original spelling or a related form.
