Molly

Molly developed as an affectionate form of Mary through older forms such as Malle and Molle. It therefore belongs to the same name family, whose earliest meaning is uncertain. “Bitter” is one traditional interpretation of Mary, but it should not be treated as a certain standalone translation of Molly.

Molly has a long history as a complete first name. The song “Molly Malone” gives it an Irish cultural association without making its etymology exclusively Irish. Molly Bloom in James Joyce’s Ulysses and actress Molly Ringwald are other recognizable bearers. Mollie is an alternative spelling with the same usual English sound. Families honoring a Mary can use Molly to keep the connection while giving a child a different everyday name.
