Mariama

Mariama is a form of Mariam used in West African naming traditions, including in Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea. Mariam belongs to the wider Mary and Miriam family, whose oldest meaning remains uncertain. Explanations such as beloved, bitterness, or wished-for child reflect different proposals rather than one agreed translation.

The name carries religious connections through Maryam in Islam and Mary in Christianity, while its ending gives it a recognizable regional form. Senegalese writer Mariama Bâ is a notable bearer, linking the name with a significant West African literary voice. Families choosing Mariama may value that cultural heritage, a religious tradition, or a particular relative. Its relationship with Mary makes it part of an international family without flattening the distinctive history of its West African use.
