Mariana

Mariana can be traced through the Roman name Marianus to Marius. The oldest meaning of Marius is uncertain, although a connection with Mars is often proposed. Mariana is also understood by some families through familiar Maria and Ana, so a personal naming story may differ from the Roman derivation.

Marianna is a closely neighboring form commonly explained as a combination of Maria and Anna. The extra n can matter to a family’s chosen spelling without necessarily changing everyday pronunciation. Mari and Ana offer possible short forms. Mariana’s use in Spanish and Portuguese gives it a language history beyond its ancient Latin ancestry.
