Mariya

Mariya is a way of writing the Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian form of Maria in the Latin alphabet. The name belongs to the Mary and Miriam family, whose ultimate meaning is uncertain. Interpretations such as bitter, beloved, and sea-related phrases come from different proposed explanations and later traditions, rather than forming a single settled translation.

The spelling makes the final ya sequence visible and can reflect a particular transliteration system or family preference. Its history is closely tied to the widespread use of Mary-family names in Christian communities, especially through devotion to the mother of Jesus. Mariya therefore offers a specific linguistic form of a very widely shared name. Preserving that form can matter when a child's name connects with relatives, records, or a language used at home.
