Marjorie

Marjorie is an established form of Margery, itself a medieval form of Margaret. The name ultimately connects with the Greek word for a pearl. Its long history includes Scottish usage, and it is not a modern compound built from the separate sounds Mar and Jorie.

Margie and Marge are familiar short forms, while Jorie emphasizes the ending instead. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of The Yearling, provides a literary namesake. Margery and Marjory offer close spelling comparisons that may matter when preserving a family connection. Parents can choose the full form they prefer while considering which nickname will feel natural in ordinary conversation.
