Marlie

Marlie is a spelling variation of Marley, a name that comes through English surnames and place names. Several places share that name without necessarily sharing the same first element. As a result, an attractive phrase such as “pleasant seaside meadow” should not be presented as the universal translation of Marlie.

The ie ending gives Marlie a familiar nickname-like appearance while retaining the same general sound as Marley and Marlee. The surname association with musician Bob Marley may be relevant to some families, while others are preserving their own family name. These are personal reasons for choosing a spelling, separate from determining which older place-name history lies behind a particular surname.
