Marlin

Marlin is both an established given name and the English name of a large ocean fish. The fish supplies a clear marine association, although not every person named Marlin was named after it. Other explanations connect the personal name with surnames or with Merlin, and its earliest route is not settled.

For many families, the name also recalls Marlin, Nemo’s father in Finding Nemo. That character is a clownfish, distinct from the fish species sharing his name. This gives Marlin two different connections with the sea: a literal animal word and a fictional parent’s story. Marlyn offers a related spelling, while Marlon is a separate name that may sound similar.
