Marlo

Marlo is connected with the English surname and place-name forms Marlow and Marlowe. The place name is often explained through a lake or pool with driftwood, so the common driftwood gloss summarizes only part of the landscape history. Marlo has also developed through personal nickname use, giving some families a separate reason for the form.

Actor Marlo Thomas, born Margaret, helped make this spelling familiar as a first name. Marlow and Marlowe preserve the more obvious surname shape, while Marlo ends with an open vowel. All three can appear on a shortlist for boys or girls, with the family’s surname history or personal association providing the clearest explanation of the choice.
