Marvin

Marvin is associated with Mervyn, an English form of a Welsh personal name. “Sea hill” is a familiar interpretation, but the older name’s elements are not securely explained by that phrase alone. Its Welsh connection is clearer than a single confident translation, and a family’s inherited use can be meaningful without resolving every etymological question.

Singer Marvin Gaye and composer Marvin Hamlisch offer distinct musical associations. Marv is a familiar shortening, while Mervyn provides a closer comparison with the older form. Marvin has also appeared in fiction, including The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, giving it a cultural life beyond any one famous bearer.
