Mateus

Mateus is the Portuguese form of Matthew, ultimately from a Hebrew name meaning gift of God. Its spelling developed through the Greek and Latin forms used in Christian tradition. The New Testament association with Matthew gives the name a religious history shared with many familiar forms in other languages.

Matheus is another Portuguese spelling, while Mateo and Matteo belong to neighboring Spanish and Italian traditions. These are related forms, but Mateus preserves its own Portuguese identity rather than simply removing a letter from one of the others. Families may choose it to honor a Matthew while keeping a language connection that matters to them. Pronunciation also varies between Portuguese-speaking regions.
