Matheus

Matheus is a Portuguese spelling in the Matthew name family, especially familiar in Brazil. The older Hebrew source, Mattityahu, combines a word for gift with a reference to God. The name traveled through Greek and Latin before developing the forms used in different European languages.

Matthew is the name of an apostle in the New Testament and is traditionally associated with the Gospel bearing his name. Matheus preserves that religious background while using a form distinct from English Matthew. Mateus is another Portuguese spelling, and both can be found in family and public records. For parents choosing Matheus, its written h belongs to the name’s spelling history rather than introducing an additional meaning or a separate biblical figure.
