Maxim

Maxim belongs to the Latin Maximus name family, from a word meaning “greatest.” It is used in several languages and should not be described exclusively as a French name: Maxime is the familiar French spelling, while Maksim represents another common transliteration. The related Max offers a shorter everyday form.

The English word maxim, meaning a concise statement of a rule or principle, gives the spelling an additional association. That vocabulary use is not the reason every family chooses the personal name. The magazine title may also be familiar, but it is a modern brand association layered onto a much older name family. These connections can be distinguished without changing the Latin meaning.
