Meera

Meera is especially associated with Mirabai, the poet and devotee of Krishna whose songs have an enduring place in Indian religious and literary life. The name is also written Mira. It is traced to Sanskrit mīra, meaning “sea” or “ocean,” rather than the unrelated light and prosperity meanings sometimes attached to it.

The double e makes a long vowel particularly visible to English readers. Mira has several independent origins in other languages, so those meanings do not automatically explain the Indian name Meera. Families may choose it for Mirabai’s legacy, a relative, or its compact two-syllable sound, letting the intended cultural connection shape the name’s story.
