Milan

Milan has several distinct histories. In Slavic naming it connects with an element meaning “dear” or “gracious.” It can also be a reference to the Italian city, whose older place-name has a separate history. In South Asian use, a connection with Sanskrit milana gives it an association with meeting or union.

Writer Milan Kundera provides a recognizable example of the Slavic name. Pronunciation can vary with the tradition intended, including where the stress falls, so the spelling alone does not settle how a family will say it. Parents can choose the history that fits their own connection without combining all of Milan’s possible meanings into one translation.
