Melvin

Melvin comes from a Scottish surname related to Melville. That surname history is more firmly established than the frequently repeated meanings “council protector” or “mill friend,” which do not reliably explain this name. Its long use as a personal name gives Melvin a history independent of whichever modern celebrity or fictional character first makes it familiar to a listener.

Mel provides a concise everyday form, while Melvyn changes the written appearance without normally changing the English pronunciation. Marvin and Alvin share some sounds but have separate origins. Families honoring an older relative may prefer to preserve Melvin exactly, or use Mel to keep the connection in a shorter form.
