Mendel

Mendel is a Yiddish name closely associated with Menachem, the Hebrew name meaning comforter. The two are often paired in Jewish naming, giving Mendel a familiar place within that tradition. Its earlier development may involve a different short-name root, so the comfort meaning is best understood through the established Menachem connection rather than as a certain original derivation.

Mendel also appears as a surname, most famously in Gregor Mendel, the researcher whose work helped establish genetics. That surname association is separate from the Yiddish first name’s family use. For many families, the most meaningful connection is an older Menachem Mendel or Mendel whose name can be carried into another generation.
