Mendy

Mendy is a familiar form of Mendel or Menachem in Jewish naming traditions. Menachem is Hebrew for “comforter,” and Mendel is a Yiddish form associated with that name. The everyday ending in Mendy gives a traditional name an affectionate shape while keeping a clear connection with its longer form and its meaning of consolation.

The combination Menachem Mendel is especially familiar in Chabad communities, where many children have been named in memory of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Mendy is often the name those children use in ordinary conversation, although it can also appear as a complete given name. For a family choosing it, the particular relative or community tradition being honored may be as important as the word meaning. Its strongest documented background is this Hebrew and Yiddish name family.
