Merritt

Merritt is an English surname used as a given name for boys and girls. It is often interpreted as “boundary gate,” although a particular family’s surname history may need more specific research. Its resemblance to the English word merit also gives it a positive association that is distinct from the surname’s older derivation.

Actress Merritt Wever offers a modern namesake, while places such as Connecticut’s Merritt Parkway keep the surname visible. The doubled final t distinguishes Merritt from the ordinary word merit. That difference allows the name to suggest a virtue without claiming it began as a virtue name like Hope or Grace.
