Mills

Mills comes from an English surname connected with mills, the buildings where grain and other materials were processed. A family surname could describe someone who lived near a mill or whose work was associated with one. The final s belongs to the surname's established form, giving Mills a slightly different shape from the related occupational surname Miller.

Mills therefore carries a small piece of working and local history. In communities where a mill served surrounding farms, it could become a recognizable landmark as well as a workplace. Used as a first name, Mills may preserve a family surname or appeal through its compact, single-syllable sound. Its meaning is most accurately explained through that everyday landscape, without attaching a grander symbolic translation to it.
