Milos

Milos commonly represents the Slavic name Miloš without its diacritic. It developed as a familiar form of names containing mil, an element meaning dear or gracious. Longer names such as Miloslav belong to that same tradition, while Miloš has an established life as a complete given name.

The mark over the s matters to the original pronunciation: š represents a sound like English sh. Removing it in an English-language spelling does not change the name’s ancestry, but it can make the intended sound less obvious. Film director Miloš Forman and tennis player Milos Raonic are recognizable bearers of forms of the name. For a family with Czech, Serbian, Slovak, or related Slavic connections, Milos offers a compact name with a clear linguistic family.
